Wicked

Are people born wicked?

Or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?

          So questions Glinda, the “good” witch in the wildly popular Broadway musical Wicked.  Indeed, why do people do wicked things? and why is there evil in the first place? have been persistently disturbing questions asked by humans, religious and secular alike, in every time and place.  Theodicy is the term coined by Gottfried Leibnitz (1646-1716) to describe the age old attempts to rationalize the goodness of a supreme deity in the face of the everywhere present evidence of suffering, terror, and tragedy.

          Our library has added several recently published books that continue to try to come to terms with the problem of evil:

          Lars Svendsen, A Philosophy of Evil.

          Herbert McCabe, God and Evil in the Theology of St. Thomas Aquinas.  

                  

          Terry Eagleton, On Evil.

        To find other books on this topic in libraries, two subject headings, GOOD AND EVIL and THEODICY will be instrumental in locating many more titles.

Big Ideas

 
The Chronicle Review, the magazine that accompanies the weekly Chronicle of Higher Education, recently came out with a feature on “What will be the defining idea of the coming decade and why?” (See “What’s the Big Idea”)  Over twenty scholars and illustrators were asked to respond to this question, and their answers make for engaging reading.  Author and computer scientist Jaron Lanier posits that it will be “The End of Human Specialness.”  Daniel J. Cohen, Director of the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University, predicts a “’slow information’ counterrevolution focused on restoring individual thought and creativity.”  Parker Palmer of the Center for Courage and Renewal, an author well represented in our library’s collection says it will need to be the resolve to rescue Democracy from irrelevancy “in the face of ‘money, faction, and fear.’”  All-in-all, big ideas that take us outside our usual workaday thoughts and concerns

First Week in the Library

The library welcomed close to 60 entering students during First Week orientation.  Our session was billed as “Food for the Body and the Mind.”  While students munched on a breakfast of coffee, juice, and bagels, they heard about the there | here divide in library resources and services: in what ways they can use the library without being physically present vs. why they may want to come anyway and, for some things, why they will still need to show up in person.  (For one, it would have been hard to serve up that tasty breakfast virtually).  It was good to see fresh faces, to greet new students eager to begin their programs, and to be reminded of our responsibility to help them find what they need when they come to us – whether in person or remotely.  With our ample and fine collection of books, journals, CDs, DVDs, and online resources, we know the nourishment (at least for the mind) will continue.
