The Chronicle
Review, the magazine that accompanies the weekly Chronicle of Higher Education, recently came out with a feature on
“What will be the defining idea of the coming decade and why?” (See “What’s the
Big Idea”) Over twenty scholars and illustrators were asked to respond to this question, and their answers make for engaging reading. Author and computer scientist Jaron Lanier
posits that it will be “The End of Human Specialness.” Daniel J. Cohen, Director of the Center for History
and New Media at George Mason University, predicts a “’slow information’
counterrevolution focused on restoring individual thought and creativity.” Parker Palmer of the Center for Courage and
Renewal, an author well represented in our library’s collection says it will
need to be the resolve to rescue Democracy from irrelevancy “in the face of
‘money, faction, and fear.’” All-in-all,
big ideas that take us outside our usual workaday thoughts and concerns
